3 Day Tramping Trips

As per Hidden Trails (Walter Hirsh) and Off The Beaten Track (Colin Moore) books

Our most poular and best known get-away, located in the very heart of Eastern Taranaki back country. It offers an adventure that most would find difficult to organise because of the transport required at both ends of the walks. It takes in native bush along the Matemateaonga Range then into Aotuhia Station, followed by a days walk along the historic Whangamomona Road. You choose the 4th mornings walk before finishing with a picnic lunch. A reasonable degree of fitness is advisable. The walking is moderate grade and follows old paper roads (now tracks) or bush tracks.

Accommodation and meals

The first two nights are spent with friendly farmstay in the Makahu area. Makahu is a farming valley off the Forgotten World Highway – turning at Strathmore. The third night is back in a farmstay, Stratford Heritage Lodge (subject to availability) or Whangamomona Hotel (subject to availability) located in the Whangamomona Village on the Forgotten World Highway (see prices below). All places have linen beds and towels provided in twin, double or single rooms. Stratford 4 day tramping trip Trampers in Taranaki backcountry bush Farmstay hosts offer catered two course evening meals (BYO alcohol) and menu at the hotel in dining room (drinks own cost). If staying in Stratford Heritage Lodge you evening meal will be prepared by a local cafe and brought to lodge.  In all places food is provided to make your own breakfast and lunch.

Modifications to tramping trips

All trips can be modified and tailor made to suit your group e.g. During Spring time Taranaki gardens are beautiful you can add another day for a “garden safari” or plan your visit in March to include WOMAD prior or after.  Change a day of walking to include a rail cart or cycle day or add them on.
